This

Alzheimer’s Society - People with dementia
missing out on direct payments
The Alzheimer’s Society has launched ‘Getting personal? Making
personal budgets work for people with dementia’ and is calling for
the personal budget system to be adapted to meet the specific needs
of people with dementia. More than three quarters of people with
dementia who receive social care support at home are not using
direct payments or other personal budgets.

A new report,
Completing the revolution – Transforming mental health and tackling
poverty, warns that the poorest with mental health
problems are failed by ‘care’ in the community’. Many patients are
being neglected and denied access to treatment because the closure
of the old asylums was not accompanied by a parallel expansion of
primary mental health services provided by GPs, psychiatrists and
nurses.
St Mungo’s - Battered, Broken, Bereft:
rough sleeping report
This
new report includes findings from the first ever survey of
outreach workers across England as well as statistics from St
Mungo's survey of its 1,500 clients - the largest survey of
homeless people of its kind.

of abuse
A new report, All Babies count:
prevention and protection for vulnerable babies,
sets out a comprehensive snapshot of clinical governance and
appraisal systems in the context of revalidation for the health
sector in England at 31 March 2011.
Record number of complaints and
disciplinary hearings against doctors
The General Medical Council received the
highest ever number of complaints against doctors and held a record
number of investigations and Fitness to Practise hearings in 2010.
The annual report of
Fitness to Practise statistics shows it received 7,153 complaints
in 2010, compared with 5,773 in 2009.

National Voices: Principles for Integrated
Care
National Voice, a coalition of health and social care charities
working to strengthen the voice of patients, have developed
12 Principles for Integrated Care based on the experiences of
service users and on research evidence.
B-eat - survey into eating disorders
& bullying
A
survey of over 600 people by Beat, the leading UK eating
disorders charity, has revealed that 65% felt bullying had
contributed to their eating disorder. This is a 41% increase on a
similar survey carried out by the charity in 2009.

challenges for mental health tariff
A new report has found that people working in mental health in
the NHS are enthusiastic about making payment by results work, but
creating the
first mental health tariff faces significant challenges before
it can be implemented properly.

Integrated service improves care
and saves at least £3.4 million
NHS Confederation's Mental Health Network, with the Centre for
Mental Health and the London School of Economics and Political
Science:
an evaluation of the integration of mental and physical health
services in one city centre hospital (Birmingham City Hospital
called Rapid Assessment Interface and Discharge) found that it has
improved care for patients while making estimated savings of
between £3.4 and £9.5 million a year.
