The Royal College of Psychiatrists Improving the lives of people with mental illness

College focuses on support for Specialty Doctors and Associate Specialists

Dr Raj Rama Iyer, new Chair of the Specialty Doctors’ Committee

As the new Chair of the Specialty Doctors’ Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am a Senior Specialty Doctor at St Andrew’s Healthcare in Essex. St Andrew’s is the largest charitable provider of NHS care.

I completed my Basic training in Psychiatry in the North East prior to my current job. I feel strongly that Associate Specialists and Specialty Doctors are making significant contributions to mental health services.

This committee will make Specialty Doctor/Associate Specialist input to College processes more formal and will acknowledge the contribution of this group of doctors, which is very important considering the challenges health services face at the moment. We will work to help Specialty doctors and Associate Specialists to integrate and engage with other committees in the college and to take leadership roles in providing high quality care for our Service users.

I believe Specialty doctors and Associate Specialists need to be involved in service development and the changes happening in the Health Service at the moment. I can assure you that profile of SAS doctors will be raised within the College and I’m looking forward to work closely with the SAS doctors and their representatives around the country. Please do get in touch with me via email.
