provides College members with a unique opportunity to hear and
learn from well renowned leaders in healthcare. In a series of
lectures and workshops, the day has been designed to focus on
important issues in leadership, engagement and quality improvement.
Delegates will also have the opportunity to learn about and explore
personal leadership development. With such distinguished speakers
sharing their knowledge and experience in leadership, this
conference promises to be an informative and inspiring day.

Dr Paula Murphy works as a Consultant Forensic
Psychiatrist / Lead Psychiatrist for the women’s service, at St
Her interests include clinical leadership and mental
health policy/research. She was a ‘Prepare to Lead’
candidate in 2010/11, a scheme aimed at preparing doctors for
leadership roles, and completed a Masters degree in Public Health
and Health Services Management at the London School of Hygiene and
Tropical Medicine in 2012.
She was a NICE Scholar in 2014/15 and completed an improvement
project related to NICE guidance.
She is currently co-editing a handbook on Clinical Leadership
and Management for Oxford University Press, in association with the
Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. She is a
member of the Forensic Faculty Executive Committee, Royal College
Dr Jon Goldin BSc (Hons) MB ChB DCH FRCPsych is a
Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Great Ormond
Street Hospital and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of
He has been Head of Service on the Mildred Creak Unit for the
past twelve years and is Lead Psychiatrist in the Department of
Child and Adolescent Mental Health (DCAMH).Dr Goldin is Joint
Training Programme Director for the Great Ormond Street/Royal
London Higher Training Scheme in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
He is also an Elected Member of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Faculty Executive at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Dr Goldin specialises in children’s inpatient work, particularly
in severe psychosomatic conditions and early-onset eating
disorders, and has published and taught widely in these fields. He
also has an interest in paediatric liaison and in individual and
family psychotherapeutic approaches to emotional and behavioural
difficulties in childhood.
The College is working closely with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and
Management (FMLM). FMLM is a UK-wide organisation
that aims to promote the advancement of medical leadership,
management and quality improvement at all stages of the medical
career for the benefit of patients.

'Join us to professionalise medical leadership and
management for better patient care
Doctors have a long and proud history of
defining and expecting high clinical standards as well as
establishing the necessary systems of training and development that
have led to massive benefits for patients.
In a recent article, Peter Lees, Medical
Director at the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management
(FMLM), announced: “It is now time to recognise the value
that medical leadership can add to that history and support all
doctors to equip themselves with the leadership skills necessary
for their various roles in complex and challenging
FMLM, established by all medical royal
colleges and faculties in the UK, champions leadership development
and training for all medical grades and specialties. As part of the
effort to serve our membership, one of the key FMLM activities in
2014 will be seven
regional conferences to engage members locally. A
major topic of consultation at these events will be the medical
leadership standards being established by FMLM this year.
All doctors, dentists and medical and
dental students are invited to participate in these events taking
place across the UK between September and November 2014 and the
annual national conference in February 2015. These events will
provide an opportunity to learn from experts in management and
leadership, share experience and know-how, network and engage in
discussions about professionalising medical leadership and
management to deliver better healthcare outcomes for patients in
the UK. Regional and annual conference places are available at
discounted rates for FMLM members and associates.
