Mental Health Care Pathways Programme (MHCP)

Implementing the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health sets out a national objective to expand access to high-quality mental health care. As part of this work, a set of evidence-based mental health pathways are being developed by the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

Guidance for the implementation of the pathways is due to be published shortly. The guidance represents a commitment to ensuring that mental health care is delivered in a person-centred, compassionate and supportive way, promoting safety and wellbeing at the forefront.

The pathways and associated guidance aim to help commissioners and providers improve access to high-quality mental health care and support, and to ensure that service users receive timely access to NICE-recommended care.

On behalf of NHS England, the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Centre for Quality Improvement (CCQI) will be collecting data from services as part of a quality assessment and improvement exercise to support the implementation of the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health. Mental health services in England will complete a web-based self-assessment tool relating to their relevant pathway, following which they will receive an individual report of their performance that will allow them to benchmark themselves against national averages.

Throughout the process, the CCQI will facilitate shared learning between clinical teams. The CCQI will also provide quality improvement advice and support to services. The self-assessment tools can feed into the CCQI accreditation programmes, and existing programmes will use the benchmarks set out in the relevant pathway implementation guidance.
