As the Chair of the Specialty Doctors
Committee I would like to welcome you to these web pages
and to introduce myself as your point of contact in the College for
all issues affecting Specialty Doctors and Associate
Specialists.
I completed my basic training in psychiatry in
the North East prior to my current job as a Senior Specialty Doctor
at St Andrew’s Healthcare in Essex. St Andrew’s is the
largest charitable provider of NHS care.
I took on the role of Chair because I feel
strongly that Specialty Doctors and Associate Specialists need to
integrate and engage with all College processes and committees
while taking on leadership roles in their clinical roles to provide
high quality care for our service users.
Our committee is made up of representatives
from around the UK and from the Faculties which have large numbers
of SAS doctors in the workforce. I am also actively involved
with colleagues from other specialties in the Academy of Medical
Royal Colleges' SAS group.
We have some achievements to report
already. For the first time, the
RCPsych Awards 2013 include a category for Specialty Doctor of
the year. This is a sign of the College’s commitment to
recognising our value in healthcare services. I have been
invited to join the Education, Training and Standards Committee to
represent Specialty Doctors and also the Policy Committee. I
will report regularly about the work of these important College
committees.
We have also held the first national
conference for SAS psychiatrists for some time at St Andrew’s
Northampton on 18th April 2013. It was a pleasure to welcome
so many inspirational speakers and to meet Specialty Doctors and
Associate Specialists in psychiatry.
In the meantime please feel free to email me on any
issues.
