Dr Claire-Marie Hosein
Chair, Psychiatric Trainees' Committee
I am honoured to serve as the newly elected Chair of the Psychiatric Trainees' Committee. As an ST5 Old Age Psychiatry Trainee and an International Medical Graduate, I bring with me a diverse range of experiences and have remained deeply committed to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion—values that are crucial to building a supportive and welcoming environment for psychiatric trainees across the UK. My previous roles, including CT representative for my region’s School of Psychiatry and PTC’s IMG representative, have allowed me to advocate for trainees from a variety of cultural and social backgrounds, ensuring that every voice is not only heard but valued and respected.
To deepen my understanding of healthcare systems and strengthen my leadership skills, I pursued a Master of Health Administration. This has equipped me with the tools to drive organisational change and improve systems of care—insights that have been pivotal in my efforts to advocate for trainees and contribute to policies that support their educational and professional growth.
I am passionate about education and have been actively involved in medical training initiatives. I am dedicated to fostering an environment where learning is enjoyable, psychologically safe, and supportive, ensuring that trainees feel understood and empowered as they progress in their careers. I believe that cultivating this kind of atmosphere is key to attracting and retaining talent within psychiatry, which is essential for the future strength of our profession.
Beyond my work advocating for trainees, I have a keen interest in the intersection of mental and physical health, with a firm belief that holistic care is central to overall patient wellbeing. Outside of work, I am passionate about travel, particularly when it involves exploring history, art, and culture. Visiting museums, galleries, and historical sites broadens my perspective on how the past shapes modern society and mental health, enriching both my personal and professional life.
As Chair, I look forward to working with my Vice Chairs, Dr Rebecca Long and Dr Jonathan May, to drive positive changes in psychiatric training. We encourage trainees to engage with the PTC, using this platform to shape their training experience and advocate for improvements that benefit everyone. Together, we aim to ensure that the diverse voices of psychiatry trainees across the UK are heard, valued, and acted upon.
