Registrar elections

Nominations to stand for election as Registrar open on 17 January 2025 and close at noon on 14 February.

This page contains everything you need to know about elections for the College's Registrar and how you can get involved by standing for election.

The term of office for the post of Registrar is five years. Please read the role description and ensure you're able to fulfil the key responsibilities before agreeing to stand.

All Members, Fellows and Specialist Associates of the College are eligible to stand for election as Registrar.

There are two routes to stand for election as Registrar:

Route 1 – Supported by Council

The nominating meeting of Council is on 17 January 2025. At this meeting, the Council will agree on a maximum of three candidates to nominate for the position of Registrar. Candidates will be proposed and seconded at the meeting and will have to provide their written consent to stand for election.

Information you'll need to provide

If you're being supported by Council, you'll need to submit the following through the online nomination platform by midday on Friday 14 February.

  • Two supporting statements:
    • a 50-word summary statement for use on the College’s communication channels
    • a 500-word election address which will appear on the ballot paper and RCPsych website
  • Good standing information: you'll be asked to confirm your good standing with your country's medical council and with regard to College membership fees.

Route 2 – Supported by other members

The second route to stand for Registrar is to submit a nomination that's supported by twelve Members or Specialist Associates who aren't members of the Council. Members can only support one nominee for Registrar.

Information you'll need to provide

If you want to stand under route two described above, you'll need to submit the following through the online nomination platform by midday on Friday 14 February.

  • The names and email addresses of your 12 supporters (they must all be Members or Specialist Associates who aren't Council members).
  • Two supporting statements:
    • a 50-word summary statement for use on the College’s communication channels
    • a 500-word election address which will appear on the ballot paper and RCPsych website
  • Good standing information: you'll be asked to confirm your good standing with your country's medical council and with regard to College membership fees.

When will voting take place?

The voting period is from 6 March 2025 - 3 April 2025. We'll announce the results on 4 April.

Voter turnout: 21.6%

Dr Adrian James elected Registrar.

Total number of votes cast: 3,297

Voter turnout: 24.9%

2010

Candidates: Dr J S Bamrah, Dr Jed Boardman, Dr Ola Junaid, Dr Laurence Mynors-Wallis

Dr Laurence Mynors-Wallis elected Registrar.

Total number of votes cast: 1,841

Voter turnout: 15.7%

2005

Professor Sue Bailey elected Registrar unopposed.
