Communications Officer

  • Location : London
  • Status : Permanent

  • Closing date : 08/07/2019

BORIS or Jeremy Hunt will be in No. 10 by the time you start this job. Although Theresa May failed to get a Brexit deal, few doubted her commitment to improving the UK’s mental health services.

We are looking for someone with the communications skills and wherewithal to ensure mental health is kept firmly on the political radar. Can you appeal to Health and Social Care Secretary to make sure people with severe mental illness get the help they need? Are you as adept at getting your messages across through the media as you are at influencing politicians and policymakers behind the scenes?

If the answer is yes, the College wants to hear from you. Join a dynamic and recently greatly-expanded team of communication professionals passionate about ensuring psychiatry and mental illness remain uppermost in the nation’s consciousness. Brimming with ideas, with a great writing style and personable manner, you will work closely with the public affairs and media managers and our digital, policy and publications teams to enhance the reputation of the College and psychiatry in general.

Some experience of working in media or public affairs is desirable, but this is a role you will be expected to grow into with help from the experienced media and public affairs team. A strong interest in current affairs, especially health, and an ability to respond quickly to journalists’ requests for comments are essential, as is a working knowledge of digital communications.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is the leading medical authority on mental health in the United Kingdom and is the professional and educational organisation for doctors specialising in psychiatry. The College plays a central role in establishing and promoting the highest standards of psychiatric care and training in the UK.

We only recruit the best and in return for your commitment, the College offers a generous salary and benefits.
