Minimum Age of Criminal Responsibility: Adolescent Forensic Psychiatry SIG Conference

Event Information

Programme highlights include:

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states that countries should establish a minimum age of criminal responsibility (MACR) and has issued a recommendation that this is 14 years old. Below this age children should be dealt with outside the criminal justice system.

It has criticised the low minimum age used in UK, where England, Wales and Northern Ireland have a MACR of 10 years old and Scotland has a MACR of 12 years old (increased from 8 years old last year).

This AFPSIG study day explores what neuroscience tells us about brain maturation, the approaches to MACR taken in other countries, young people's experience of the criminal justice system in England and explores alternative disposal options such as the introduction of Secure Schools.

The study day will help inform the planned Royal College Position Statement of the Minimum Age of Criminal Responsibility.
