Virtual Half Day Event

For the greater part of 2020 medical professionals worldwide have been attempting to manage the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychiatrists, and in particular those specialising in the care of older patients have faced a significant and unique set of challenges. This is due in part because of the nature of the diseases that affect our patients, but also because as we now know, increasing age is highly correlated with complications of COVID-19 and mortality.
Since March, when the only symptoms to be alert for were pyrexia and cough, much has been learned – about COVID-19 itself, but also about the psychiatric sequelae, and about how to run services and deliver psychiatric care in the face of limitations imposed by measures to contain the spread of COVID-19. Together this comprises a significant body of knowledge derived from experience which should be shared amongst our old age colleagues in Wales.
This will be a half-day learning event, being held in virtual space and accessible by attendees via video communications software. The aim will be to address the key challenges faced by old age psychiatry teams during the pandemic.
