Event Information

Digital Psychiatry SIG Webinar:  AI in Psychiatry – What psychiatrists and patients should know

Thursday 29 June 2023, 12.30-2pm

Join this webinar to hear more about artificial intelligence (AI) in psychiatry and what psychiatrists and patients should know.

Can AI be used to improve the ability of clinicians to provide better care?

What are the challenges and limitations of AI-driven tools in mental health care?

You will hear about a new innovative tool in the NHS that uses an algorithm driven by electronic health record (EHR) data analytics, to inform decision making about the care of individuals and the planning of resources.

Find out more about conversational AI for mental health and what it can offer to patients and clinicians.

Learn about the ethical issues around patient-clinician interactions, such as trust, transparency and autonomy and listen to specific case studies, including a conversational AI tool and a clinical decision support system tool being developed by the Oxford Precision Psychiatry Lab.

Dr Rebeca Martinez

Clinical Director Adult Community Mental Health Services

Dr Rebeca Martinez is a General Adult Community Consultant Psychiatrist working in Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. She is also Clinical Director for Adult Community Mental Health Services, and has led an evaluation of the implementation and use of the Management and Supervision Tool as a digital aid to patient care and digitally assisted clinical decision making. She has an interest in how NHS organisations implement and adopt innovations and ways to embed practice. Dr Martinez is the Clinical lead for her Trust on the Community Mental Health Framework and Transformation Program and is a former GP – who is also passionate about working at the interface between Primary and Secondary care.

Ross O’Brien

Ross is the Managing Director of Wysa, the world’s most advanced conversational AI for mental healthcare.  Ross has over 13 years experience  within the NHS in roles including Director of Innovation and Technology, CNWL and Programme Lead for the London Digital Talking Therapies Programme at Healthy London Partnerships where he worked to establish a digital single point of access and triage tool for Londoners. Ross is also a Founder of the UK XR Health Alliance which produced 'The Growing Value of XR in Healthcare in the UK' a report bringing together NHSX, HEE and UKRI to propose a national strategy for Immersive Healthcare.

Bessie O’Dell

Bessie is a DPhil Candidate at the University of Oxford in the Oxford Precision Psychiatry Lab (OxPPL) and the Neuroscience, Ethics and Society Group (NEUROSEC). Her current research focuses on the use of conversational AI and virtual humans for mental health care – particularly for depression and PTSD. She is interested in the bioethical issues raised in the use of these tools, especially potential impacts on the patient-clinical relationship. In her work with OxPPL she helped to establish and run a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group focused on developing a clinical decision support tool (PETRUSHKA) for the treatment of major depression.
