South Asian History Month: Current and future challenges

This week we hosted the second of our two special free webinars to mark the College’s first ever South Asian History Month, with speakers exploring the impact of Covid-19 on South Asian people, issues posed by systemic racism, how South Asian doctors can be supported and valued, and what the College is doing on tackling systemic racism and promoting equality.

Introduced by Dr Subodh Dave, Consultant Psychiatrist, Derby, we heard from:

• Professor Kam Bhui, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Oxford,​ and Editor in Chief, British Journal of Psychiatry - South Asians and experiences of interpersonal and structural racism in the UK: contemporary implications for anti-racist societies, practice and policies
• Dr Ananta Dave, Medical Director and Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust - The impact on Covid-19 on South Asian people: looking back, looking forward
  
• Dr Shahid Latif, Chair, RCPsych Transcultural SIG - How South Asian doctors can be supported and valued
  
• Dr Rajesh Mohan, Chair, Faculty of Rehabilitation and Social Psychiatry - Future challenges for South Asian doctors
• Dr Trudi Seneviratne, Registrar, Royal College of Psychiatrists - What work the College is doing on tackling systemic racism and promoting equality
