Mental health problems and social mobility

An NCCMH review of the impact of mental health problems on social mobility, commissioned by the Social Mobility Commission (SMC).

In 2019, we were commissioned by the SMC to ascertain the relationship between mental health problems and social mobility.

Specifically, we looked at:

  1. the impact of depression and anxiety disorder on social mobility;
  2. the impact of social class on access to mental health treatment and on treatment outcome;
  3. the impact of mental health treatment on social mobility; and
  4. whether personal protected characteristics have any bearing on the relationship between mental health problems and social mobility.

As part of our research for this project, we carried out a systematic review of the literature – the first of its kind on this topic.
