Scottish mental health campaigner shortlisted for top RCPsych award

A Scottish mental health campaigner who has lived experience of schizophrenia has been shortlisted for a top RCPsych award.

Graham Morgan, who lives in Argyll, was nominated for the Patient Contributor of the Year Award by RCPsych in Scotland Chair, Dr Jane Morris.

Nominees of the award are recognised for the significant contribution patients make to developing and improving mental health services.

Active in mental health advocacy for forty years, Graham recently assisted the College by sharing his lived experience for campaigning and media work around SMI.

He has written two memoirs and was joint vice-chair of the recent review into mental health legislation in Scotland.

He has spoken nationally and internationally, including at the UN Committee against Torture.

Speaking about his nomination, Dr Jane Morris, said:

“In both his career and personal life, Graham has generously shared his memoirs which has had a healthy impact on the mental health of Scotland and further afield.

“Graham is able to stimulate curiosity into mental health issues and is a living participant in the enactment of the very legislation he has helped create and continues to critique.

“He is an inspiration and active educator to students, trainees and colleagues who work with him. Graham is a role model to us all.”

Graham has been shortlisted for the award alongside Dr Sophie Allan and Young Adult Ambassadors, Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust.

The winners are due to be announced at a glittering ceremony on Thursday 6 November.
