Expert Witness Training for Psychiatrists

Overview

Our two-day course covers giving evidence in a wide range of civil and criminal courts and jurisdictions including: Family Courts; Criminal Courts; Mental Health Review Tribunals and other Tribunals; Coroner’s Inquests.

Psychiatrists will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to provide relevant and comprehensive expert opinions in written reports and to be balanced and effective expert witnesses in a range of Court Settings. 

Course content includes:

• Overview of structure of the UK Court Systems
• The special role of the Expert witness in Criminal, Family and Civil proceedings
• Assessing the mental state of adults and children
•  Court Report Writing Skills Workshop
• Examination in chief and cross examination
• Criminal proceedings: Assessing Fitness to Stand Trial, Fitness to Plead, Diminished Responsibility, Mental Capacity and other medico-legal concepts
• Defending your Expert opinions in court
• Ethical issues in Court work

Our training team includes Professor Keith Rix, Dr Margaret De Jong, Dr Shubalade Smith, and leading barristers and lawyers.

All psychiatrists - Attendance at this Expert Witness course will satisfy the College competency requirements in relation to court work

The event will take place at the America Square Conference Centre, 17 Crosswall, London, EC3N 2LB. You can view directions and a map to help you plan your journey.
