‘The ‘hard problem’ of consciousness is said to be the most important unsolved question in neuroscience today, if not in all science. This presentation will suggest a new approach to the problem, starting from the claim that our efforts to solve the hard problem should not have taken visual cortical processes as their starting point. Visual cortical processes are not intrinsically conscious.
The hard problem becomes less hard if we start elsewhere, namely with affect and some interesting nuclei in the brain stem…’
