Dr Adrian James – President, RCPsych - "Medical leadership in the current NHS climate and the Impact of COVID"

ABSTRACT

Dr Adrian James will reflect on his leadership journey to President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists from his role at a mental health trust in Devon. He will look at the importance of being bold, taking colleagues with you and looking after yourself. He will also highlight what the College is doing to champion diversity, and specifically, encouraging more women into leadership. He will                                              also reflect on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on staff.

Paul Rees, CEO RCPsych - "College Support for New Consultants"

ABSTRACT

Mr Rees will discuss the organisational structure of the College, the Strategic objectives of the College, the core values and behaviours instilled into all actions within the College, and the support that the College can offer new consultants.

Dr Hasanen Al-Taiar (Vice-Chair, South Eastern Division, RCPsych) - "Division Support for New Consultants"

Dr Al-Taiar will discuss the role of the Executive Committee and the Division Office, and the support these two can offer new Consultants.  

Professor Nandini Chakraborty - “A comparison of pathways to the specialist register in psychiatry - what they mean for your career and those you supervise”

ABSTRACT

The certificate of completion of training (CCT) is the most well-known route to the specialist register, which entails 3 years of core training, 3 years of higher specialty training and passing the MRCPsych exams. Many experienced clinicians will also take the CESR route (Certificate of eligibility for specialist registration). 

Both routes have their advantages and disadvantages. However substantive consultants have a duty to understand both if they are to be educators with a view to guiding doctors in both training and non-training jobs to progress in a way which is personalised and brings out their particular strengths. This talk covers: 

• the processes of CESR and CCT and a comparison between them 
• what can CESR mean for a psychiatrist already with a CCT, in terms of career progression
• how do you help a supervisee decide which is the pathway for them
• can psychiatrists use a combination of CESR and CCT for career development.

Professor JS Bamrah CBE - “What would a Trust want from a new consultant: from the viewpoint of a Former Medical Director”

ABSTRACT

Consultants newly appointed by a Trust usually face a big transition, regardless of whether they are fresh from their CCT or if they have moved from another Trust. Prof Bamrah will highlight what attributes are helpful to the Trust, and how crucial it is for consultants to engage in the strategy and planning at the Trust.

Dr James Jeffs - "Medical appraisal and revalidation - preparing new consultants for it"

Abstract

This talk will cover the key GMC requirements for revalidation and how to use the appraisal process to evidence the required information to demonstrate these requirements have been met. It will consider the status of GMC, AoMRC, and Royal College guidance around appraisal. 

Dr Justin Wilson - "Negotiating a Job Plan as a New Consultant"

Abstract

Justin will discuss the process of negotiating a job plan as a new consultant, considering the purpose and practicalities of job planning and how to achieve a workable plan from the doctor and employers’ perspectives.  He will refer to his experience in several systems, NHS Trusts and other organisations. 

Dr Ananta Dave - "Managing Team Conflict Through Effective Leadership Skills"

Abstract

Clinical service delivery in the NHS takes place through team working.  It is really important that respectful collaborative working is built into teams through effective leadership.  Resolving conflict and embedding a positive culture within teams is a core component of good leadership.  Through anonymised case examples, reflection and personal experience I will be presenting ways in which effective leadership in this area can be demonstrated.

Dr Alison Conway and Dr Simon Michaelson - "The Consultant Interview- Preparing & Performing Well"

Abstract

Consultant interviews can be pretty daunting. This session will cover both performing in the interview itself and how best to prepare beforehand.

What are the common sorts of questions these days? How can I stand out? How will I stop the interviewers from falling asleep?

Simon and Alison hold regular sessions on the North West London Regional Higher Training Course on both preparing for consultant interviews as well as running mock consultant interviews. 

The aim of this session is to come away with ideas and tips on being able to be your best at interview.

Dr Rachel Gibbons - "Coping with suicide, complaints and serious incidents as a new consultant"

Abstract

One of the most challenging aspects of being a new consultant is experiencing serious incidents including the suicide of a patient. In this talk Dr Gibbons will use her own personal experience as a new consultant to help prepare for these events.

Dr Geoff Marston - "Getting the most out of Mentoring and Coaching: Enhancing personal resilience and wellbeing"

Abstract

Dr Marston’s talk will aim to give a brief overview of mentoring and coaching and how to get the most out of it. He will specifically look at its role in personal development, supporting wellbeing and maintaining resilience throughout the different stages of a career in psychiatry.

Dr Sharada Deepak and Dr Marjan Ghazirad - "Making connections: Setting up a local StartWell Support network"

Abstract

Dr Deepak and Dr Ghazirad will be delivering a talk on their experience of setting up a local Startwell support network.

This is a two-stage event.

Three pre-recorded modules - a link for each module will be sent to delegates 3 weeks before the live online Q&A session on 13 October 2021. These can be viewed at a time suitable to delegates.

On 13 October 2021, there will be a live two-hour session for delegates to attend.  This will be a Q&A session where all speakers will be available to answer any questions.  A meeting invite for this live event will be sent to all delegates that have registered for the event.  A registration list will be taken on the day so that a certificate of attendance can be issued.

The live Q&A session will be recorded.

Delegates will be asked to send any questions they have for the speakers to the Division Manager prior to the live event, but there will be an opportunity on the day to personally ask the speakers any questions that they may have.

There are 8 CPD points available for registering and attending the live session pending peer group review.
