Paul Barber, non-practising solicitor and formerly partner in and consultant to Bevan Brittan, is a trainer over many years in mental health and mental capacity law. Paul is co-author of Mental Health Law in England and Wales and The Mental Capacity Act - A Guide for Practice (both 3rd editions).
Debbie Martin is Director of the Bournemouth University, South West England Approved Mental Health Professional's/BIA course, and an independent trainer. Debbie provides training for many local authorities and trusts, and for s12 approved doctors and Approved Clinicians in the South West, Midlands and Wales. Debbie is co-author with Paul Barber and Rob Brown of Mental Health Law in England and Wales, 3rd Ed (2017), and The Mental Capacity Act 2015, A Guide for Practice, 3rd Ed (2015), published by Sage/Learning Matters.
One of the following experienced consultant psychiatrists will be involved in each course. They are approved clinicians and members of the Midlands and East of England Mental Health Act Approvals Panel.
Dr Tom Clark MB ChB MRCPsych LL.M
Tom has worked as consultant forensic psychiatrist with Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust since 2002, and is the Clinical Lead for Reaside Clinic and Hillis Lodge medium and low secure units. He is honorary senior lecturer in forensic psychiatry at the University of Birmingham, an approved clinician and West Midlands Vice Chair of the Midlands and East of England Mental Health Act Approvals Panel. He regularly works as an expert witness, mostly in criminal courts. Tom has edited three textbooks of psychiatry and has written book chapters and academic papers relating to mental health law, including the interface with the criminal law. As a past regional Training Programme Director, he is an experienced educator, and regularly gives invited lectures on topics related to forensic psychiatry.
Dr Nina Champaneri MBChB MRCPsych
Nina has worked as a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in the Forward-Thinking Birmingham (0-25yr) Crisis and Home Treatment Team for five years and is Clinical Lead for Urgent Care. She is a member of the Midlands and East of England Mental Health Act Approvals Panel and approved clinician with considerable clinical experience in applying the Mental Health Act in both adults and children as well as dealing with the Children's Act and Mental Capacity Act. Nina was an expert reference group member for the NICE Access to urgent care group for children and young people. She is an enthusiastic teacher and regularly teaches on the MRCPsych course.
Dr George Theodoulou MBChB MRCPsych DGM
I have worked as a substantive consultant psychiatrist since 2008; working in community, inpatient and acute hospital liaison settings. I completed my psychiatric training in the West Midlands gaining specialist registration in old age and general psychiatry. I am currently section 12(2) approved, a MHA Approved Clinician, a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards mental health assessor, an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Worcester and sit on the Midlands and East of England Mental Health Act Approvals Panel. I have also been the clinical director for older adult mental health services in Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust (2013-2016). I have considerable clinical experience in applying the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act as well as dealing with the interface of the two Acts. I regularly carry out Mental Health Act assessments, DoLS assessments and mental capacity assessments for the Court of Protection. I lecture and teach widely on all aspects of psychiatric practice.
Dr Helen Whitworth MB ChB, FRCPsych, MSc, Cert MHS
I am a consultant forensic psychiatrist working in South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in secure services and HM prisons. I am medical lead for the forensic directorate. I am a medical student support tutor and honorary clinical lecturer at Keele University. Since December 2016, I have been Training Programme Director for advanced trainees in forensic psychiatry in the West Midlands. I was formerly the forensic representative on the West Midlands S12(2) executive panel and am currently a member of the Midlands and East of England Mental Health Act Approvals Panel and an approved clinician.
