New Members' Ceremonies
More than 150 new RCPsych members from as far afield as Malaysia, India and Egypt joined us during April and May, as we held three online New Members’ Ceremonies.
Our in-person New Members' Ceremonies are always a special moment, when psychiatrists who have passed their MRCPsych join us at the RCPsych offices in central London, often accompanied by their families, to be formally welcomed to the College as members.
We last held an in-person New Members’ ceremony in October 2019, with the pandemic forcing us to cancel several planned ceremonies last year.
So, we were delighted to be able to hold the online ceremonies, and all virtual attendees will also be invited to face-to-face events when we recommence the physical sessions.
The 157 who were honoured during the virtual ceremonies registered as Members of the College between mid-August 2019 and the end of July 2020.
Ages of those taking part ranged between 28 and 54, with attendees logging in from across the globe, also including Bahrain, Ireland, Malta, Qatar, and UAE.
At the events, members were welcomed with speeches from Chief Executive Paul Rees, Dean Dr Kate Lovett, President Dr Adrian James, Registrar Dr Trudi Seneviratne, Treasurer Dr Jan Falkowski and Chair of the Psychiatric Trainees Committee Surgeon Lieutenant Commander Luke Baker.
These were the final New Members’ Ceremonies to be held during the tenure of Dr Lovett as Dean and Dr Falkowski as Treasurer, who will both be finishing their roles at our AGM next month – to be replaced by Professor Subodh Dave and Professor John Crichton respectively.
The ceremonies were watched live by a total of 286 attendees from across the world. Attendees joined from 25 different countries outside the UK.
We’ll be holding more online ceremonies next month to celebrate Fellows who were elected in 2019 and 2020.
