Introducing our first Quality in Training report

The Training and Workforce team at the College has published the first ever RCPsych Quality in Training report.

The report provides an overview of the psychiatric training workforce activities from Autumn 2019 – December 2020.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • an overview of CCT applications, including information on the new online process
  • COVID-19 and the impact on training, including a summary on ARCP, Outcome 10 statistics, and the results of the National Training Survey 2020
  • CESR and Equivalence
  • an overview of Out of Programme (OOP) applications
  • the Curricula Review Project
  • external Advisor attendance at ARCP panels
  • the MTI Scheme
  • MRCPsych Exams
  • plans for 2021 and beyond.

In 2020, the Training and Workforce team also held their first “Deanery Cross-Working Webinar Series”, which provided an opportunity for clinicians and deanery administrators to meet and discuss key topics of interest, including the curricula review project and ARCP outcome variation.

The series received positive feedback, and the cross-working events will be held annually going forward.

For 2021 and beyond, the team are planning on improving their quality assurance processes, including:

  • developing more robust oversight of post and programme approvals through the College’s Specialty Advisory Committees (SACs)
  • annually reviewing ARCP outcome data for key trends
  • further development of the role of the External Advisor.

In addition, reasons for ARCP outcome variance across regions will be assessed more thoroughly, with work on more standardised decision aids taking place as part of the curricula review project.

We intend to publish the report annually and aim to include more information on our Psychiatrists Support Service (PSS) and wider plans for wellbeing, as well as the StartWell initiative for new consultants.
