The RCPsych in Scotland Autumn conference will take place via Zoom on Friday 1 October. The main theme will be the mental health of adolescents and young adults and the challenges of transition from Child and Adolescent to Adult services and will cover suicide and self harm, eating disorders and the impact of social media on the mental health of adolescents and young adults.

Our new Chair, Dr Linda Findlay has planned a series of virtual meetings across Scotland ahead of the annual strategy day in November to listen to the concerns, challenges and successes of members in Scotland and to let them know a bit about the work the College has been progressing in order to better support and engage Scottish members.

In addition, plans to host an RCPsychiS Trainee Conference at the end of October are underway. Further information will be available shortly.

Free access to the new Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines

Did you know you have access to the new 14^th edition of the Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines via the College Library?

About the new edition: “several new sections cover topics such as deprescribing of major psychiatric drugs, prescribing psychotropics at the end of life, the treatment of agitated delirium, the genetics of clozapine prescribing, the use of weekly penfluridol, and the treatment of psychotropic withdrawal.”

You can access it on the eBooks tab of the Library’s online resources search tool.

Free access to eBrain

Did you know you have access to the eBrain learning platform?

eBrain is a non-profit initiative brought to you by the Joint Neurosciences Council. It provides 650+ interactive, multimedia-rich lessons in 24 modules, such as Performing a Neuropsychiatric Examination and Principles of Developmental Neuropsychiatry in Children and Young People. The learning material on eBrain also includes question banks, virtual case reports, practice examinations, learning paths, and a bibliography.

The website has a new look and layout for 2021 plus a new podcast series.

Suggest a book

Is there a particular book we don't have that would make a useful addition to the library? Do you think we need more copies of an important textbook? The Library welcomes suggestions from members for library stock. Members can send us an email at infoservices@rcpsych.ac.uk or give us a call on 020 3701 2761 / 020 3701 2520. These can be for books, journals or online resources.

Items suggested will be carefully considered but not all necessarily obtained

Please always check the library catalogue before making a suggestion.

Accessing eBooks

Have you checked out the College Library's collection of ebooks? We have 45 available, including the Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines, Oxford Textbook of Neuropsychiatry and Kaplan and Sadock's Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry. We're also looking for recommendations – get in touch!

Over the summer we launched our new and improved online learning platform, the RCPsych eLearning Hub. An evolution of our older platforms, CPD Online (CPDO) and Trainees Online (TrOn), the new site will be the home of College eLearning resources for all members.

CPDO launched first on the Hub, rebranded as CPD eLearning, while TrOn will also move to the new site this autumn, followed by Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician Induction and Refresher training.

Subscribers with access via their Trust or institution will also gain access this autumn in our second phase of launch. We will be in touch with your Trust Administrator with more information around the launch very soon - please ensure you download any certificates you have generated before the end of October, if you would like to keep them for your records.

The Psychiatrists' Support Service (PSS) provides free, rapid, high quality peer support by telephone to psychiatrists of all grades who may be experiencing personal or work-related difficulties.

Our service is totally confidential and delivered by trained Peer Support Psychiatrists (PSPs). Our PSPs are from diverse backgrounds and have received training in many different areas, to improve their understanding and ability to support all those who call the PSS.

As a service, we are aware that the difficulties faced by doctors vary enormously. We will support you through whatever they may be, including burnout, workplace bullying and discrimination, serious incidents, as well as coping with stress and change. Our support service manager and our PSPs will talk with you in confidence, without stigma or prejudice.

We have a new MindEd Session Brochure and Infographic, which are both attached and available to view and download from the ‘resources’ section of our website. The MindEd Session Brochure details and provides links to all 500 of our el-earning sessions and tips pages. It is a working document and will be updated and re-uploaded to our website whenever new content is launched.

Our new infographic, MindEd: A Year in Review, developed by HEE (Health Education England), highlights our achievements and usage from April 2020 – April 2021.

On 10th November 2021, from 2pm – 5 pm, the Northern and Yorkshire Division are pleased to be welcoming Dr David Cousins and Professor Heinz Grunze, M.D. to their Webinar discussing bipolar disorder. 

Programme

How confident are you in diagnosing bipolar disorders? Prof Grunze will be discussing the focus on boundaries of bipolar disorders – atypical manifestations, bipolar NOS and comorbidities.

Dr Cousins will then discuss Lithium treatment – theory and practice: An update on the current use of lithium, focusing on optimal prescribing and the management of common side effects. Future directions informed by the latest understanding of the actions of lithium.
