Wales summer school

RCPsych Wales recently held its first summer school for sixth formers in partnership with the Senedd and TEC Cymru.

Five sixth year students with an interest in psychiatry received two days' worth of presentations and workshops from a range of professions across mental health, including a session with Dr Elaine Lockhart, chair of the College's Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Faculty.

The students also undertook workshops on climate change and sustainability, facilitated by Dr Kathryn Speedy and a workshop on refugee and asylum seeker mental health.

This was combined with a visit and tour of the Senedd, where students had opportunities to present their thoughts to Sarah Murphy MS (Senedd Member for Bridgend). They were also given the opportunity to speak to senior officials from the Senedd research team about how decisions are made in Wales.

To complement the visit, students watched Professor Keith Lloyd give evidence to the Health and Social Care Committee on Mental Health Inequalities.

Feedback from the students was very positive and RCPsych Wales hope to work in partnership to grow the programme in the future.
