RCPsych Wales recently held its first summer school for sixth formers, this was in partnership with the Senedd and with TEC Cymru.

The pilot event saw five 6^th form students with an interest in psychiatry, or other mental health related careers, receive two days' worth of presentations and workshops, giving them an insight into working in the mental health sector.

We also held a half day conference looking at the transitions from Child to Adult services. The event saw speakers from a variety of sectors, including charities and clinicians giving talks on how to improve the transition between services.

The Psychiatrists' Support Service (PSS) provides free, rapid, high quality peer support by telephone to psychiatrists of all grades who may be experiencing personal or work-related difficulties.

Our service is totally confidential and delivered by trained Peer Support Psychiatrists (PSPs). Our PSPs are from diverse backgrounds and have received training in many different areas, to improve their understanding and ability to support all those who call the PSS.

As a service, we are aware that the difficulties faced by doctors vary enormously. We will support you through whatever they may be, including burnout, workplace bullying and discrimination, serious incidents, as well as coping with stress and change. Our support service manager and our PSPs will talk with you in confidence, without stigma or prejudice.

The Quality Network for Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams (QN-CRHTT) is pleased to publish the 5th edition of standards.

QN-CRHTT was established in 2012 to support the quality improvement of crisis resolution and home treatment teams in the UK. These standards have been developed from recommendations in key literature, research, and in consultation with a range of stakeholders. This edition has seen the inclusion of new standards for the crisis line response, children and young people and older people.

The Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network (PLAN) team are very pleased to have published the network’s third national report.

The report includes data collected from peer-reviews of liaison psychiatry services which took place between 2018-2020, using the fifth edition of PLAN standards.

The report contains themes for liaison psychiatry services including areas of achievement and good practice, as well as areas of improvement, and recommendations. The report also contains overall contextual information amongst services, executive summaries, patient, carer and staff feedback, and a focus on high-risk assessment rooms. We would like to thank all of the teams involved for your work and ongoing commitment to quality improvement. 

The Public Mental Health Implementation Centre (PMHIC) have started a monthly blog series, entitled 'Perspectives on public mental health', which aims to highlight the voices of practitioners, patients, carers, and public health experts.

In their first blog post, Abiola Awojobi-Johnson shares her personal perspective on being a carer and the importance of diversity and representation in mental health care, titled the colour of counselling.

South west CT1 welcome event – 27 September 2022

27 September 2022, 3pm-4pm, virtual

This webinar will complement the national RCPsych and local Deanery welcome events and aims to introduce newly appointed core trainees to the Division and advise on how to get the most out of training in the south west.

There will be a range of speakers along with divisional Trainee Representatives Dr Persephone Taylor, Dr Zoë Gray and Dr Simon Corke. There will also be time for questions related to training in the south west to be answered on the day.

South West Autumn Biannual Meeting: ‘Women and mental health’ – 11 November 2022

Dr Dheeraj Rai and Dr Elizabeth Ewins are putting together an exciting programme on the theme of ‘Women and mental health’ for the SW Autumn Biannual Meeting, which will be held in-person at a venue in Bristol. The day will also include a breakout networking and opportunities session that is specifically aimed at trainees.

South west retired doctors event – 2 December 2022

The South West Division would like to invite you to our next event for retired doctors which is a one-day virtual meeting via Teams. The topic will reflect mainstream needs of psychiatrists and there will be a short update on revalidation. There will also be an opportunity to network with colleagues, hear member experiences and share advice.
