South Asian History Month

For the third year in a row, the College has celebrated South Asian History Month (SAHM) with a range of activities looking at the history, culture and issues affecting people with roots in the South Asian countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

If you have missed out, you can access our videos and webinar discussions that have covered a range of topics including inequalities within the South Asian context; the interaction between culture, music and the brain; gender disparity as a threat to the mental well-being of young Sri Lankan women and individual member reflections on what it's like to be a South Asian psychiatrist living and working in the UK.

Our South Asian History Month celebrations conclude this year with a special guest blog from former President of the College, the World Psychiatric Association and the BMA, Professor Dinesh Bhugra CBE.

Professor Bhugra was the College’s first officer of South Asian heritage when he became Chair of the Faculty of Adult and Community Psychiatry (1997-2001); Dean in 2003 and subsequently elected unopposed to be the President in 2008. He has been involved in SAHM celebrations since they were first introduced in 2020. 

This year, he shares his own journey of becoming a psychiatrist, his views on intersectionality, its impact on mental health and his personal experience of being part of the Asian and LGBTQ+ communities.
