The Royal College of Psychiatrists is seeking an exceptional Media and Communications Manager to join the External Affairs team, to promote the profile of our 20,000 strong membership in the UK and globally.
This is a unique role that requires fast-paced, news-reactive, press responses – working with high profile media outlets on a daily basis – seeking out stories and contributing to the daily news cycle. Alongside, strategic planning, with a long-term and bigger-picture view, contributing to our influencing agenda.
As the Media and Communications Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the public narrative surrounding mental health. Your expertise will contribute to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and helping to improve the understanding of psychiatry and mental illness. With your strategic vision, you will develop and implement effective communication strategies to ensure our messages reach diverse audiences through our various media channels.
Collaborating closely with renowned psychiatrists and mental health experts, you will have the opportunity to create compelling content, oversee media campaigns, and build strong relationships with journalists and stakeholders. You will lead a talented team, inspiring them to deliver impactful media campaigns and drive engagement. With a good understanding of Government and the civil service, you will also work closely with our policy and campaigns team, to develop a media strategy that increases our influence by enhancing our reputation and keeping our voice in the news.

You will have solid experience of leading a team and developing strong working relationships with key media contacts. You will be comfortable working at a fast pace, seeking out stories, and working on sensitive issues in a high-profile environment.
You will have excellent judgement skills and be able to offer sound advice to senior colleagues across the breadth of our work. As a current or past journalist, you will be a talented writer with experience of running media campaigns and providing communications expertise to a wide range of work programmes. A social media advocate, you will have experience of using it to successfully listen, engage and share information.
You should be prepared to lead by example by demonstrating diligence, willingness to work above and beyond the tasks set, and to work flexibly to ensure that tasks are finished ensuring that the College is able to respond to the 24-hour media day.
