The Royal College of Psychiatrists is seeking 12 Patient and Carer representatives to join the Ligature Harm Minimisation Expert Reference Group (ERG) as Workers, to ensure varied representation and expertise around the table, from people (and their carers) who have first-hand experience of inpatient care services.

This important piece of work has been commissioned by NHS England and falls within the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH) Safety Improvement Programme. It aims to support mental health care providers in inpatient settings, to minimise the use of ligatures, to improve experiences and outcomes for people in their care. Patient and Carer Representatives will become integral members of the ERG, using their experience and insight to advise and guide the project team.

The Patient and Carer Representatives are expected to attend and contribute to both ERG meetings, scheduled for mid-December 2021 and January 2022 (date TBC), and collaborate with the group and the project team to complete the aims of the project.

To improve mental health care in inpatient settings, this work aims to support healthcare professionals in their delivery of care, enhance positive experiences for users and improve overall outcomes for both.

RCPsych has developed a high media profile and is a leading organisation in terms of equality and diversity. It was a recent winner of Charity of the Year at the European Diversity Awards.

This is an excellent opportunity for patients and carers to contribute their perspectives on important mental health issues for the Public Mental Health Implementation Centre and be part of our ongoing strategy and communications development.
