New race equality leads

Our new President Dr Adrian James has moved quickly to appoint Dr Lade Smith CBE and Dr Raj Mohan as his Presidential Leads for Race Equality, to advise him and the College on formulating a new race equality strategy.

Dr Smith, a consultant psychiatrist, academic and Director of the College’s National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH), and Dr Mohan, a consultant psychiatrist and Chair of the Rehabilitation Faculty, started their roles on the same day as Adrian took up office, on Wednesday 1 July.

They will be key members of a new College race equality task force, which will be co-chaired by Adrian and our Chief Executive Paul Rees.

The race equality strategy will aim to promote race equality for College staff, College members and doctors and patients in the NHS.

The Presidential Leads on Race Equality will be supported by the appointment of our first ever Race and Equality Manager, with interviews due to take place on 20 July.

Adrian said: “Promoting race equality is a key priority for me during my term of office, and I campaigned in the Presidential election on a pledge to promote diversity.

“Racism is one of the great ills in our society today, and this was cruelly highlighted recently by the appalling killing of George Floyd.

“Lade and Raj will play a key role in our work over the next three years and help us formulate and execute a race equality strategy which will promote race equality for College staff, College members and across mental health services.”

The work on race equality will form a key part of our work to deliver Adrian’s agenda of:

  • Workforce Wellbeing
  • Sustainability.
