Advancing Mental Health Equality Collaborative: wave 2
The National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health is launching wave 2 of the Advancing Mental Health Equality (AMHE) Collaborative to continue tackling and reducing mental health inequality.
The aim of this collaborative is to support mental health care providers in order to reduce mental health inequalities in their local areas.
The collaborative, part of the College’s Equality Action Plan, provides a fantastic opportunity for organisations to access expert support and guidance to tackle a difficult but extremely important area in the push for better mental health care for all.
Dr Fatin Hussein from Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and Lee Reed from NHS Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group – who both are participating in wave 1 – spoke to the College about how being part of this project had helped them begin to tackle mental health inequality in the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community in Somerset:
“The Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community is a population that traditionally hasn’t accessed our trust’s health services.
“The AMHE Collaborative has given us the time, space and framework to interact with this community and service users in a different way. We as health workers are now going to service users and using a quality improvement approach to find ways to engage this community of service users.
“We are breaking barriers and stigmas to start developing and designing a bespoke service, that will work for this community.
“For a long time we felt that the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller population were undeserved, now thanks to the collaborative we are beginning to build trust and work with this community. This is a bridge to reducing mental health inequality in the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller population in Somerset.“
Wave 2 of this collaborative launches in October 2022 and expressions of interest open on 1 June. This interest period will last for a month and presents an opportunity for you to learn more about the collaborative and submit an expression to join this work.
