Powerful questions – what makes a really great question?
The right question to the right person at the right time can be transformational.
Questions can be used to focus your mind when you need clarity or to open up possible ideas when you are stuck for solutions.
Michael Bungay-Stanier has some good questions in his book “The Coaching Habit”, with my personal favourite… “And what else?”
When you ask questions to find ideas and ways forward, adding possibly or might or could e.g. “What could you possibly do... and what else?”, “who might possibly help... and who else?”
Focusing questions are usually helpful when you need to clarify what the goal is e.g. “what specifically do you want?” or when refining action steps e.g. “By when precisely will you do this?”.
