How long has this been going on? – how long should a mentoring relationship last?

Traditionally mentoring relationships went on for longer than coaching relationships. Coaching tends to be more goal focussed and may be particularly limited if this is a 'paid-for' service.

However competing demands and varying expectations mean that it is a good idea to agree an initial length of time for the relationship. This can be periodically extended if this is mutually agreed.

Mentoring should be an empowering process and not promote dependency, so keeping endings in mind from the beginning is essential.
