The GROW model: a structure for mentoring
06 January, 2020
The GROW model is a structure within which coaching or mentoring can happen. Originally developed by Sir John Whitmore the model was outlined in his book ‘Coaching for Performance’ published in 1992.
The letters stand for parts of the coaching process;
- Goal – what does the person want today from the coaching and in the future?
- Reality – what is the current situation? Barriers/ concerns etc.?
- Options – once you have explored the current situation, what are the options that can be taken towards the goal?
- Will – how much motivation is there to get there? How can this be enhanced and barriers, internal and external, overcome?
By keeping to this very basic structure, trusting in the process, asking the right questions around this framework and giving the mentee time to think, it is amazing what new insights and clarification of direction can be achieved for them.
