Dr Jonathan May
Vice Chair, Psychiatric Trainees' Committee
As Vice Chair of the Psychiatric Trainees Committee, I will ensure the ideas and concerns of all psychiatric registrars (CT1-ST6+) are given voice and consideration by enabling an effective interface between elected PTC representatives from across the UK and the Royal College.
I completed my Primary Medical Qualification at the University of Aberdeen, with one highlight from my time there being awarded an "Honourary Half-Scarlet" by Robert Gordon University for my work as President of the multi-university Interprofessional Education Society. I thereafter completed a Masters in Clinical Pharmacology before "surviving" Foundation Training in West Scotland. More recently, I moved to Edinburgh where I am currently in the process of completing Core Psychiatry Training in the South-East Scotland Deanery.
Outside of clinical work, I hold a variety of roles at the British Medical Association. These include sitting on Scottish Council Executive, the Scottish Resident Doctors Committee, the Mental Health Specialty Training Board, Lothian's Local Negotiating Commitee (LNC-RDS), and the newly formed national Equality and Gender Committee (which I was particularly keen to get involved in to champion for reforms to promote representation and improve culture and civility within both the BMA and more widely in the NHS). In both my work with the College and BMA, my main goal has always been to improve conditions for doctors across the UK and give a voice to individuals who may feel isolated and unheard while potentially facing extremely challenging circumstances.
Lastly, I want to take this opportunity to speak directly to anyone who has cared enough to find this page and read all the way to this point - please join the PTC and put yourself forward for these sorts of elected roles! It can be a decent bit of extra work, but we need more people who care about the issues and want to make a positive change for the future. In the same vein, thank you so much to all of the current PTC representatives who have gotten involved and are being those agents of change today.
