Course Introduction

This course will enhance your understanding of quality improvement and your role leading this within your team, service and organisation. It is suitable for psychiatrists at all levels and will build your understanding of the key aspects in developing a culture of continuous improvement.

Topics that will be covered include:       

  • What is quality improvement?
  • How to build a culture of continuous improvement?
  • The sequence of improvement and basics of improvement methodology
  • How to lead quality improvement within a service

The course will be led by Dr Amar Shah (College QI lead), Dr Helen Smith (Medical Director, Devon Partnership NHS Trust) and Dr Ruth Briel (Senior Clinical Director, Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS FT) through short lectures with exercises and discussion focused on application.

  • Clarify a shared understanding of quality improvement
  • Develop an appreciation of the key aspects in developing a culture of continuous improvement within an organisation
  • Understand the sequence of improvement common to all methodologies
  • Explore the role of the psychiatrist in leading quality improvement within their service
