Prizes and bursaries

To encourage interest in research in addictions, we've established a prize for psychiatric trainees, staff grades and associate specialist doctors who present a poster at our annual meeting.

Prize

£300

  • The conference fee and travel expenses will be reimbursed to the successful candidate
  • Shortlisted candidates will be offered a bursary which covers the conference registration fee, but not travel expenses.

Rules

  • Posters will be judged on originality and relevance to addictions
  • All candidates will be advised approximately six-eight weeks before the meeting and the final prize judging will be made and announced at the meeting
  • The winner will be expected to provide the full text of their poster presentation for inclusion on our website.

    Who can enter

    Third-year and above medical students in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

    Rules

    • Eligible students are invited to submit an original unpublished essay of up to 5,000 words on an aspect of addictions psychiatry of their choice. Your essay should be illustrated by a clinical example of any aspect of medical and psychiatric practice relevant to addictions, e.g. General Practice, Accident and Emergency, General Medicine and Public Health.
    • Your essay should demonstrate an understanding of issues relating to addictions with relevant links to other medical specialties.
    • Your essay should be supported by a literature review and should be your own work.
    • The prize will be judged by our Chair and two other members of the Executive Committee.
    • We will cover reasonable travel costs for the winner, along with their registration fee for one day of the conference.

      We offer an opportunity each year for psychiatric trainees to present a lecture to the Faculty’s Annual Meeting. The lecture is usually presented on the second day of the conference.

      All psychiatric trainees (CT1-ST6 and equivalent), staff grades and associate specialist psychiatrists.

      Rules

      • You are invited to submit a current concise CV and a 400 word abstract of the paper you wish to present.
      • The prize will be awarded on the basis of originality and the relevance of addictions.
      • Shortlisted applicants may be invited for a telephone interview, and the winner will be offered support and mentoring in developing their lecture.
      • Applications will be judged by members of our executive committee.

      We are offering the opportunity for Medical Students, Foundation Doctors and Core Trainees to attend our upcoming Addiction webinar series as part of the Addiction Future Training Initiative (AFTI) by submitting a short infographic poster.

      The webinars are an opportunity to learn about the following key topics in addiction psychiatry:

      • Alcohol Use Disorders – an update for psychiatrists (28th September 2021)
      • Clinical Management of Dependence on opioid drugs and/or prescription medication in psychiatric settings (27th October 2021)
      • Stimulant Drugs, Club Drugs and Cannabinoids in Psychiatric settings (25th November 2021).

      Please note that registration to the above webinars allows you to access them on demand.

      Free attendance at the upcoming webinar series (worth up to £80).

      Who can enter?

      The prize is open to:

      • Medical Students (who are associate members of RCPsych)
      • Foundation Doctors (who are associate members of RCPsych)
      • Core Trainees (who are registered as a pre-membership psychiatric trainee (PMPT))

      We are offering up to 10 places per cohort (30 in total).

      Rules/Criteria

      The topic is Why addiction psychiatry matters, which should be presented in the form of an infographic.

       

      Please note the following criteria:

      • Please specify your membership type as listed above, and your training grade (medical student, foundation doctor or core trainee) when you submit.
      • Infographics can be submitted in either portrait or landscape. We recommend that they are sized to A4 and sent via PDF.
      • Please accompany your infographic with either a short 3-minute video or an information document explaining the graphic. Videos can be sent in MP4 format (e.g., presented and recorded on Zoom or Microsoft Teams).
      • Infographics will be judged by a small panel.
      • We will inform successful candidates prior to the first webinar and will make arrangements for their registration to the webinar series.
      • Winning infographics will be used in promotion material for the specialty going forward.

      Submission and closing date

      Prize submissions open on 23 August 2021. 

      Submissions will close on Monday 6 September 2021. Please submit a PDF of your infographic and accompanying information (either via written document or video) to pauline.whitelaw@rcpsych.ac.uk. Videos should be submitted in MP4 format.

      We will announce the winners on or around Friday 17 September.
