The Royal College of Psychiatrists Improving the lives of people with mental illness

Workforce information

The College plays a major role in workforce planning and aims to ensure the provision of a well-trained workforce of psychiatrists in the UK able to deliver safe, sustainable and flexible services for patients. The Training and Workforce Unit, based in the Professional Standards Department of the College, supports and manages a number of workstreams as part of this aim.

Workforce planning

The College works with Health Education England (HEE), NHS England and the devolved nations and other organisations to support improvements to the planning of education and workforce programmes. The College worked with HEE on their mental health workforce plan supporting the Five Year Forward View for NHS England. The College also works with the faculties and divisions to set out the evidence of workforce needs across the psychiatric specialties.

Royal College of Psychiatrists workforce census

Every two years the College conducts a survey of the non-trainee psychiatric workforce in the UK. The results from the 2017 RCPsych workforce census, the latest survey published, are available on the College website. The next workforce census will be conducted in 2019.

Job planning and recruitment

The Training and Workforce Unit supports the College's Regional Advisors and Specialty Representatives, who have a crucial role in approving NHS consultant and specialty doctor job descriptions for psychiatrists. The Unit also supports a large network of over 500 College Assessors, who attend Advisory Appointment Committee (AAC) panels on behalf of the College and help ensure NHS appointees are of the required standard.
