About workforce

Our team plays a major role in workforce planning in the UK.

We want to make sure there's a workforce of well-trained psychiatrists delivering safe, sustainable and flexible services for patients.

Please see our Workforce Strategic Plan 2020-2023.

We work with Health Education England (HEE), NHS England, the devolved nations and other organisations to support improvements to the planning of education and workforce programmes.

Some of our successes include working with HEE on their mental health workforce plan supporting the Five Year Forward View for NHS England.

The College is also working to make sure we have the mental health workforce we need to meet current and future needs. This includes supporting projects with stakeholders to determine reasons for attrition between different stages of training.

The College is currently supporting such a project and is inviting external organisations to bid for project funding to run an in-depth exercise looking at reasons the reasons why psychiatry trainees sometimes don't progress from CT3 to ST4. For further information and details of the project, see Understanding career choices in psychiatry.

For further information, see our campaigning for better mental health policy section.
