Perinatal Section

About us

The Perinatal Section was inaugurated in 1996. It aims to:

  • promote the subject of perinatal psychiatry within the College
  • provide a network of support and information for interested psychiatrists
  • promote the provision of services for childbearing women with mental health problems
  • develop educational opportunities for psychiatrists in training
  • foster research in the area of perinatal psychiatry
  • act as a resource for the College in its links with other related professional bodies, governmental organisations and the public

The following three priorities for the Perinatal Section are:

  1. Education, Training and CPD - Define and promulgate competencies for perinatal consultants.
  2. Clinical Service Development and Policy - Promote the development of perinatal Managed Care Networks in all areas, as per NICE guidance, to support efficient service delivery along clear care pathways. Develop guidance on safeguarding children in context of perinatal psychiatry. Lead development of outcomes definitions (MRO) and PBR (Alain) relating to perinatal psychiatry, and closely monitor developments on commissioning. Ensure perinatal and infant mental health is included in the public mental health agenda as it develops. Workforce planning: maintain or increase numbers of trainee perinatal psychiatrists.
  3. Research - Set up a formal research network.

The Section has an annual scientific meeting. The inaugural meeting was held in 2002 and are now timed to occur in November of each year. Non-members are welcome to attend and details of forthcoming meetings are posted on these pages. An annual business meeting is held during the scientific meeting.
