Workforce information


The College plays a major role in workforce planning and aims to ensure a well-trained workforce of psychiatrists working in the UK to deliver safe, sustaninable and flexible services for patients.

The Training and Working Unit, based in Professional Standards in the College, supports and manages a number of workstreams as part of this aim.


Royal College of Psychiatrists workforce census 2013

Every two years the College conducts a bi-annual survey of the psychiatric workforce in the UK. The results from the 2013 RCPsych Workforce Census, the latest survey conducted, are available on the College website.


Job planning and recruitment

The Training and Workforce Unit supports the network of College Regional Advisors, who have a crucial role in approving NHS job descriptions for psychiatrists. The unit also supports a large network of nearly 500 College Assessors, who attend Advisory Appointment Committees on behalf of the College and ensure consultant appointees are of the required standard. 


Workforce planning

The Training and Workforce Unit works with Health Education England (HEE) and other orgainsations to support improvements to the planning of education and training programmes from 2015. The HEE workforce plan is available here.The College also works closely with the Centre for Workforce Intelligence, who have recently published an in-depth study on the future workforce needs in psychiatry.
