Event Information

This event is all 4 sessions of the Medico Legal Masterclasses series – Led by the South Eastern Division.

    The session will include two hours of presentation from Georga Godwin, with short break in the middle, followed by 1 hour for Q&A and a chance to present a case study to get advice.

    Delegates are encouraged to pre-submit a case study they wish to have discussed. Please keep case studies anonymous and submit to division.events@rcpsych.ac.uk.

    We are delighted to announce the following speaker for this session:

    Georga Godwin is a senior lawyer who currently practices in Oxford as a Consultant Solicitor specialising in mental health and incapacity law.  She was called to the Bar in July 2005 as a member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn, and was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in 2008.

    Georga was short-listed for The Law Society’s Human Rights Lawyer of the Year 2018, (the first mental health lawyer ever to be nominated). She is a contributor to the Oxford Textbook of In-Patient Psychiatry (OUP, 2019).  She is an experienced human rights advocate and mental health lawyer representing both civil and forensic mentally-disordered clients before the First-tier Tribunal Mental Health.  She advises clients regarding their detention under the Mental Health Act, to enable them to achieve discharge and appropriate after-care in the community. When necessary, she has sought Judicial Review proceedings regarding the provision of after-care facilities.  She also has experience of ensuring that mentally-disordered children receive appropriate community care and Education Health and Care Plans.

    Georga provides legal opinions on high profile cases for various NHS Trusts and is  an experienced trainer and mentor, equipping those working in psychiatric services and peers with the legal skills and knowledge to help protect the rights of all those detained under the Mental Health Act. She is a member of the Mental Health Lawyers Association, and is also a Social Mobility Ambassador for The Law Society.

    • Do I need to book the full webinar series, or can I book each webinar individually?

      Each session is available to book as an individual webinar. If you book and pay for an individual webinar you will receive a link to watch this live and will receive the recording for this one session. We also have the option to book the full series which will give you access to all four individual webinars and the recordings with a 15% discount.

    • Will all 4 webinar episodes will be available on 29 February?

      No. Only session one will run on 29 February. The next three episodes will run on three separate dates in May, September and December 2024.

    • What are the dates and topics for each webinar session?

    • How long will each session recording be available to watch on demand?

      All recordings will be available to watch on demand until 5 February 2025.

    • I booked and paid for one individual session but would now like to book for the remaining three. Do I need to pay for each individually or am I entitled to a discount?

      Yes. We can offer you a discounted rate if you would like to purchase additional webinar sessions. Please contact division.events@rcpsych.ac.uk and we can arrange this for you.

    • If a book all four sessions, will I receive a certificate for each session I attend, or will this be sent once all four sessions have taken place?

      You will receive an individual certificate for each session after it has taken place. Certificates are sent out via email within two weeks of the event date. Please ensure the email address linked to your membership account is up to date otherwise you may not receive it.

    Please kindly note, all sessions will be recorded and the recording made available within two weeks of the event.

    We would encourage those who register to attend on the day of the event, should they wish to ask questions to our speakers.

    All recordings are sent out to delegates via email to the email address used at the time of registering. If you are unsure whether your email address is up to date, please update this via your membership account.
