Culture of Care Programme

The National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH) are delighted to open registrations to take part in the Culture of Care Programme.

The programme is free to organisations who provide inpatient Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism (MHLDA) care, and we would like to work with every such organisation in England (NHS, Community Interest Companies and the Independent Sector).

The registration period is from Thursday 8 February 2024 to Friday 15 March 2024. During this period we ran two Q&A sessions to provide an overview of why the programme is so important, how we will approach the work, and this will also be a space for you to ask us any questions. You can view these below.

The three documents below provide more information about the programme, including guidance on how to select wards to put forward, how organisations will learn from each other in our learning networks and community, the support we will provide for leaders in each organisation and the information each organisation will need to gather for registration:

Register your organisation for the Culture of Care Programme

Registration to take part in the Culture of Care Programme is now open using our online form. We hope the information pack that we have provided helps in preparing your responses for the registration form, on which we ask for key contact details, the wards you would like to register, details of senior executive(s) for the leadership element and an outline of co-production in your organisation.

We ask that each organisation registers only once. If you have any questions or would like to speak with a member of our team, please do not hesitate to contact us on cultureofcare@rcpsych.ac.uk.

This form will be live until Friday 15 March 2024.

These sessions included a brief overview of the programme from Tom Ayers, Director of NCCMH, and questions from the audience.

    More information on the programme

The Culture of Care Programme is part of NHS England's Quality Transformation Programme and has the scope of:

    • coaching 200 inpatient wards and around 60 corporate teams across England to improve the culture of the care that they provide, in both NHS and private settings, supporting them to work to the forthcoming NHS England Culture of Care standards.
    • providing executive coaching and reverse mentoring to Boards in all of those organisations.
    • supporting them to move away from risk-assessment tools to a holistic approach to safety on wards.
    • doing all of the above through a trauma-informed, autism-informed and racial equity perspective.

The NCCMH have partnered with some excellent organisations to deliver this work - Black Thrive Global, the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Safety in Mental Health (NCISH), and Neurodiverse Connection, and as well as Quality Improvement (QI) expertise that we already have in our team, we have added:

    • Lived Experience leadership
    • a group of senior leaders with sector, national and international experience
    • experts in:
      • a trauma-informed organisational model
      • embedding peer support into organisations
      • compassionate and relational care.

If you have any questions, please email the team on cultureofcare@rcpsych.ac.uk.
