I am a consultant psychiatrist and writer with bipolar disorder. I was admitted to the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in my twenties, and was treated with medication and ECT, subsequently training as a psychiatrist (despite advice to the contrary). I now work in the Addictions and Chronic Pain Services in Edinburgh, and still experience episodes of illness. I have blogged and written about my experiences, in both the Guardian and Prospect Magazine, and my memoir, “An Improbable Psychiatrist”, will be published this year by Cambridge University Press.
