Dr Abdi Sanati

Chair, Professional Practice and Ethics Committee and Elected Fellow

Abdi was born in Tehran. His father was the son of a USSR Gulag victim. Abdi grew up during revolution and war, and after finishing medical school came to the UK in 1999. He was trained in different parts of the country and became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2004. In 2017 he was awarded the Fellowship of the College.

Abdi has worked in different capacities in the RCPsych including Regional Advisor for East/Northeast London for 5 years, Chair of the Philosophy Special Interest Group, Vice-Chair of the Human Rights Committee, and recently an executive member and academic secretary of the General Adult Psychiatry Faculty. He is also a member of Pan-London Section 12 Approval Panel.

Abdi has been active in teaching, which includes teaching medical students at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. Having studied and practiced in three different continents, Abdi endorses the importance of the concept of culture in Psychiatry, without descending into cultural relativism.

Abdi’s interests include literature, art, philosophy, jazz, cooking and London Metal scene.
