Dr Jonas Eberhard

Jonas Eberhard, MD, PhD is a consultant psychiatrist, Associate Professor (Reader) and Senior Lecturer at Lund University, and Research Group Leader of the Severe Mental Illness Research Unit at Skåne University Hospital in Helsingborg, Sweden.
He studied medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, where he graduated and subsequently trained in psychiatry. Following his PhD on clinical and neurocognitive aspects of schizophrenia, he undertook postdoctoral research at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. His career has also included international work in pharmaceutical research and development at Lundbeck. He combines academic work with continuing clinical practice.
His research focuses on severe and difficult-to-treat mental disorders, including schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, treatment-resistant depression, brain stimulation, neurodevelopmental disorders and dual diagnosis. He is involved in clinical trials, postgraduate education and doctoral supervision, and is affiliated with Lund University’s Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities.
Jonas is President of the Swedish Psychiatric Association, Treasurer and Journal Editor of the Nordic Psychiatric Association, and currently serves as Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ European Division. His professional interests include strengthening psychiatry as a medical specialty, specialist training, international collaboration, and the relationship between scientific evidence, clinical practice and mental-health policy.
He played a leading role in bringing the World Congress of Psychiatry to Stockholm in 2026, the first WPA World Congress held in Scandinavia. He is also engaged in public and professional debate on psychiatric services, diagnostic practice and the future role of psychiatry in healthcare.
