Dr Howard Ryland 

Dr Ryland is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist with Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust where he is currently working across several prisons. He is also a Research Fellow with the NIHR Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre. He has been the Editor of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ (RCPsych) CPD eLearning and Trainees Online since January 2024.

Dr Ryland completed his DPhil in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford in 2021, focused on understanding which outcomes are important for patients and clinicians in forensic mental health services. He went on to develop a new outcome measure for forensic mental health services called the FORensic oUtcome Measure (FORUM). He is the Vice-Chair of the RCPsych working group on Outcome Measures.

His other previous roles include National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (2012-2013), Chair of the RCPsych Trainees’ Committee (2013-2014), Darzi Fellow in Medical Education (2014-2015), President of the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees (2017-2018), NICE Scholar (2019-2020) and Research Fellow at the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (2023).
