Event Information
Overview
This session will explore Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), a severe and debilitating hormone-based mood disorder. One in three people with PMDD attempt suicide and one in two self-harm, therefore, accurate diagnosis and treatment is crucial. Despite this, it usually takes many years for a diagnosis to be made, and it is likely that for many patients the condition is never recognised.
This session will help clinicians appreciate the complexities of diagnosing PMDD and the biological, psychological and social ramifications for the patient. Provide education to support clinicians to understand how to diagnose PMDD and the potential challenges in reaching a diagnosis and finally support clinicians to gain a greater understanding of how to manage PMDD within mental health settings.
Speakers
Dr Sophie Behrman
Sophie is a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist working in an Oxford City Centre Community Mental Health Team. She runs an NHS clinic for patients in Secondary Care Mental Health Services with Menstrual or Menopause related challenges.
Sophie is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Menopause Working Group and coordinates a network of psychiatrists with special interests in menstrual disorders and mental health problems associated with menopause. Sophie has organised educational events and written publications around the interplay between Menopause and Menstrual Disorders and Mental illness.
Emily Elson
Emily is a passionate advocate for education on Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and Eating Disorders. Inspired by personal experiences, she shares her story widely to raise awareness.
Committed to co-production and equal power sharing, Emily has collaborated on many projects and notably co-produced the PMDD e-learning module for RCPsych.
Her work aims to educate clinicians and the public and to illuminate the challenges faced by those living with these conditions.
