Understanding Hoarding: Bridging Research and Practice 

Hoarding is a behaviour exhibited by 2-6% of the population, with hoarding disorder as recognised in the DSM-5 and ICD-11 affecting 2.5% of the population.

Hoarding is characterised by excessive accumulation, difficulty discarding and clutter that takes over active living spaces and involves impaired functioning and quality of life. Research and development of treatment have been hindered by problems with insight in patients, highly stigmatised and secretive nature of the condition and the often-complex presentation due to co-morbid mental and health conditions.

This talk will review what we know about hoarding with direct implications for practice and policy in the UK.
