Latest Psychopharmacology Updates - Northern and Yorkshire Division Spring Conference 2025

We will explore recent advancements in psychiatric treatment for Alzheimer’s dementia, antipsychotic therapies, and emerging treatments for depression,  discussing implications for clinical practice.

The event will cover:

Recent Advances in the Management of Alzheimer’s Dementia – Dr George Crowther:

A review of the emerging evidence base for monoclonal antibody therapy in Alzheimer’s type dementia.

Newer Antipsychotics – Dr Niraj Ahuja:
An in-depth discussion on newer antipsychotic medications, including those not yet available in the UK, as well as underutilised options and updated clinical guidance. The session will also cover antipsychotics with newer formulations, and a review of future directions.

New and Emerging Treatments for Depression – Dr Parveen Kumar Sharma:
An update on the latest pharmacological innovations, including neuromodulation and psychedelics treatment advances for major depression.

Dr George Crowther

Dr George Crowther is a Consultant in Old Age Liaison Psychiatry, Medical Lead for Older Peoples’ Inpatient Services, and Joint Clinical Lead for Research and Development at Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust. He is also a Regional Speciality lead for Dementia and Neurodegeneration with the Research Delivery Network.

George’s clinical and research interests lie in the management of complex dementia symptoms and improving physical healthcare in dementia. He is also currently leading on a project engaging Asylum Seekers and Refugees in mental health research. He is the co-editor of the Handbook of Old Age Liaison Psychiatry and has published widely in this speciality.

Dr Parveen Sharma

Dr Parveen Kumar Sharma has more than 17 years experience working as a General Adult Consultant Psychiatrist.

He specialises in General Adult Psychiatry and is also a Consultant with the adult ADHD services at his NHS trust.

He provides holistic and comprehensive assessments with treatment of co-morbidities in adult ADHD including patients presenting with significant mood, anxiety and substance misuse issues.

He also has a strong academic background in mood disorders, contributing to research and publications in the field. His work includes publication on depression in acute wards. He is an investigator and co-author of a Ketamine ECT trial book in Mood Disorders. He is a panel member for developing depression treatment pathway consensus. 

Dr Niraj Ahuja

Dr Niraj Ahuja currently works as a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Regional Affective Disorders Service (RADS) in Newcastle.
