What will this event cover?
The North West Division are pleased to announce this webinar with Professor David Owens. Professor Owens deliver a presentation on “We’re still here! The intransigent problem of neurological side-effects in psychopharmacology”.
Presentation overview:
To highlight the issue of drug-induced movement disorders for a generation practicing in an era where the topic has slipped in relevance from the forefront of psychiatric research.

About the speaker
Professor David Cunningham Owens
Professor Owens is Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh and former honorary consultant in general psychiatry at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. He trained in psychiatry, and general medicine/neurology in Glasgow before moving to the Division of Psychiatry at the MRC’s Clinical Research Centre, Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow where the research focus was schizophrenia, returning to an academic post in Edinburgh in 1992.
His career-long interests have been in the biological basis of major psychiatric disorders, especially schizophrenia and psychopharmacology, particularly of antipsychotics. He is the author of the sole, single-authored textbook on drug-induced movement disorders, currently in its second edition. He has, in addition, over 20 years of involvement in drug regulation at both the UK and European levels.
