ADHD and Autism Cross Cultural Revelation

Event Information

The South Eastern Division are pleased to host this webinar on ‘ADHD and Autism cross cultural revelation’ with Dr Sai Achuthan and Dr Dave Barker.

Event overview

This CPD presentation examines how current diagnostic tools for autism and ADHD systematically disadvantage women, ethnic minorities, and those with co-occurring conditions in UK clinical practice. Drawing exclusively on peer-reviewed journal evidence from 2021–2026, it critically evaluates the ADOS-2's cultural blind spots, the AQ-10's poor real-world accuracy, and the emerging AUDHD profile. Participants will leave with an evidence-based framework for more equitable, culturally responsive neurodevelopmental assessment.

Key learning objectives

  1. Recognise AUDHD as a distinct presentation — understand why co-occurring autism and ADHD requires integrated assessment rather than siloed diagnosis, and how it is frequently missed in women.
  2. Identify why women have been historically underdiagnosed — understand camouflaging, the Female Autism Phenotype, and how male-normed diagnostic criteria have created decades of missed and misdiagnosed women.
  3. Critically evaluate cultural limitations of the ADOS-2 and AQ-10 — understand why the "gold standard" observation tool embeds Western social norms, and why the AQ-10 showed specificity as low as 0.29 with 64% false negatives in UK clinical populations.
  4. Apply cross-cultural, gender-sensitive screening to UK practice — understand why AQ-50 minimum (supplemented by CAT-Q) provides a more robust, equitable screening approach for the UK's diverse population.
