The Future of Psychiatry: Global Challenges and International Perspectives

Event Information

The London Division are pleased to host this webinar on 'Future of Psychiatry: Global Challenges and International Perspectives'.  The event will be chaired by former RCPsych President, Prof Dinesh Bhugra.

Event Overview
Psychiatrists everywhere are voicing increasing concern about the future of psychiatry as a coherent and viable clinical practice. From rising population need and increasing public demand, to diagnostic ‘inflation and over-reach’; from new disruptive digital technologies to the industrialization of ‘mental health’; from worsening funding shortfalls to the lack of research into new effective treatments; from the re-emergence of ‘anti-psychiatry’ to a new politics of populism, etc etc, the challenges are many, and the list goes on.

Change is needed, but what kind of change?

  •  What are the major global challenges we face - where and when?
  • What ‘futures’ must we avoid, and what better alternatives can we collectively imagine and promote?
  • Looking across the world what can we learn from each other in terms of practical responses to the challenge, and how might we adapt and adopt such innovative practice to our own local circumstances
  • Working together, what can we do, both locally and worldwide, to realise a new collective vision for our profession – a new future for psychiatry?

This webinar will bring together an eminent panel of renowned international speakers and leaders in psychiatry, drawn from around the world, including Europe, China, Brazil, and the USA, as well the UK, to address and discuss these urgent questions.

Confirmed Speakers:

  • Professor Norman Sartorius
  • Professor Derek Tracy (UK)
  • Professor Helena Moura (China)
  • Professor Linda Lam (Brazil)
  • Professor Neil Aggarwal (USA)
